The Story of Morellino di Scansano DOCG:
Small town Scansano is located in the southwest of Toscana, within the region of Maremma coast. Compare to the name of this small mountain city that few people know about, the DOCG red wine ‘Morellino Di Scansano DOCG’ that produced here is more famous.
The word「Morellino」 came from「Morello」. Morello means black cherry color, which is the color and luster for this grape. In Italian ‘lino’ is the comparative form. Therefore, Morellino can say as small crystal luster in black cherry color.
In fact, Morellino is the Maremma dialect of the famous grape “Sangiovese” in Chianti. Because Scansano situated in the coastal area, the micro climate ( soil ingredients, the sunshine and rainfall) is totally different to Chianti, where located in the central inland area which named「Heart Of Tuscany」. It is more likely to the climate in southern Italy, therefore, taste of Morellino and Sangiovese has delicate difference.
Morelino Di Scansano DOCG always been a neglected red wine. The making of the wine needs Morellino at least 85% up. As Morellino already carried with strong aroma of fruit, that’s Morellino Di Scansano DOCG mostly mix up with typical Toscana black grapes that not with fruit aroma as main taste. Some of them may even mix with 2 – 3 more kinds of grapes (each occupies about 2 – 5%). As compares to red wine produced in Chianti area, composition is obviously different. Most of the Chianti wine will only mix one kind of black grapes, or even made in very tranditional way – 100% Sangiovese, thus conjured out into two kinds of completely different but good wines.
Morellino Di Scansano DOCG has also ‘Riserva’ class. For general version, because no need to store into wooden barrel, fruit from gathering till made into finished wine needs only 8 months to 1 year, then put into the market. It is a kind of fresh, young and lively DOCG wine. For Riserva class needs to store into oak barrel for at least 1 year time, which bring more favour of wood.
